About the Author: Eoin Colfer is a former elementary school teacher. Artemis Fowl was

Teaser inside the cover of the hardcover version of Airman by Eoin Colfer-
Conor Broekhart was born to fly. In fact, legend has it that he was born flying, in a hot air
balloon at the Paris World's Fair.
In the 1890s Conor and his family live on the sovereign Saltee Islands, off the Iris coast.
Conor spends his days studying the science of flight with his tutor and exploring the
castle with the king's daughter, Princess Isabella. But the boy's idyllic life changes forever
the day he discovers a deadly conspiracy against the king. When Conor tries to intervene,
he is banded a traitor and thrown into jail on the prison island of Little Saltee. There, he
has to fight for his life, as he and the other prisoners are forced to mine for diamonds in
inhumane conditions.
There is only one way to escape Little Saltee, and that is to fly. So Conor passes the
solitary months by scratching drawings of flying machines on the prison walls. The
months turn into years; but eventually comes the day when Conor must find the courage
to trust his revolutionary designs and take to the skies.
Review by Jack, 13, (Concord, MA)-
Airman is a excellent book with exciting plot twists and unique views of all the characters.
When the main character; Conor, is blamed for murdering the king, he is thrown in jail.
Conor knows that he must escape, but how? Drawing on the knowledge taught to him by
tutor and close friend Victor, he devises a cunning scheme involving balloons, fireworks
and the jailer himself. As the time ticks, the author builds up other plots, all to come
crashing down at the appointed time.
I would rate this book 4/5 Stars because of the amusing characters and their antics.
Filled with swordplay as much as knowledge, Airman is a great read for all. I particularly
enjoy the setting of Great Saltee and Little Saltee. Colfer puts his imagination to the work
to come up with these unique islands. Truly a great read.
