Gathering Blue
About the Book: Gathering Blue is a companion book with The Giver and The
Messenger. It was the second book released in the threesome companionship.
Teaser on the back of the paperback version of Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry-
Kira, an orphan with a twisted leg, lives in a world where the weak are cast aside. She
fears for her future until she is spared by the all powerful Council of Guardians. Kira is a
gifted weaver and is given a task that no other community member can carry out. While
her talent keeps her alive and brings certain privileges, Kira soon realizes that she is
surrounded by mysteries and secrets. No one must know of her plans to uncover the
truth about her world - and to find out what exists beyond it.
Review by Stephanie and Jack (Concord MA USA, 13)-
In the sequel/companion book to The Giver, our view is switched to another society and
another main character. Kira's story begins sadly with the death of her mother. Kari was
born with a twisted leg, and in a society that revolves around "pulling your own weight,"
she is looked down on. She has befriended a tyke named Matt and his dog, Branch, and
the carver named Thomas. After her mother died, she was taken to the Council of Elders
who decided to keep her because of her weaving skill. Kira begins learning how to dye
fabrics from a nice old lady named Annabella, while at the same time she realizes that
everything is not as simple as it fist seems.
I would rate this book 3.5/5 Stars because it offers more insight into The Giver and tells
us more about the time period and givers us a hint as to what might have came before. I
think that Lois Lowry was very creative by putting two very contrasting places in the same
time period. If anyone has read the previous book in the series, I would definitely
suggest this book to them. I thought that if this was in the future, we(humans) have
regressed in evolution, but in Jonas' Community, they are more advanced. I also thought
that the ending was better then in The Giver.
