Shield of Stars
Series: The Shield, Sword and Crown
About the Author: It was 17 years of writing before Hilari Bell's first book sold.

A former pickpocket, Weasel is the type of boy most people would avoid. Certainly, no
one would ever trust him—except for one man. Justice Holis took Weasel off the streets,
gave him a home, a job as his clerk, and a key to his house. Weasel's new life may be a
bit boring, but for the first time, someone actually cares about him.
Now Justice Holis is the one in trouble. Arrested for treason, he will surely hang unless
someone saves him—and that someone can only be Weasel. But what can one boy
do? Nothing, without help.
So with a mysterious girl named Arisa by his side, Weasel goes in search of the Falcon,
the most dangerous bandit in Deorthas, but also the one person who would be able—
and possibly willing—to stage a prison break.
But Weasel's fate changes when he stumbles upon a shield. Could this be the one said
to have been lost for centuries, the one that bestows power on whoever holds it? If so,
Weasel, once a lowly pickpocket, could be the most powerful person in the land.

Weasel fumbled the cloth aside. It was a shield, steel plate over dark wood, with rotting
leather straps. It looked old, and battered, and real.
Review by Jack (Concord MA USA, 13)-
In Hilari Bell's first book in the "Shield, Sword and Crown" Series, we are introduced to a
former pickpocket who had been taken in by the trusting Judge Hollis. When copying
letters of treason against the young prince's regent, palace guards burst in and
apprehend the Judge. Weasel escapes and breaks into the palace to request that the
king release the Judge. For all his efforts, Weasel is locked up with Arisa, a stranger who
proves invaluable to his journey. From there the story expands, encompassing a journey
through the countryside in a journey to find a way to help the judge.
I rate this book 4/5 Stars because it had a great and original plot, but was over quickly
and left out some important description. The author kept feeding us bits of information to
keep us interested and on the edge of our seats. The author also adds some surprising
revelations that would never be guessed in a million years. The character of Weasel was
well though up and is interesting to watch as he changes his priorities of himself and
others. Overall, a thoroughly satisfying book that clamours for a sequel.
