Silverboy
Teaser on the back of the hardcover version of Silverboy by N.M. Browne-
The thick sanctuary band on his wrist, glowing with magically inscribed runes, his silvery
glow and white hair seemed to guarantee that he would be avoided at every turn, that
people in his path unexpectedly found some other place to go, and that curious eyes
would never meet his own.
Teaser in the cover of the hardcover version of Silverboy, by N.M. Browne-
Spellgrinders' apprentices rarely survive long enough to become spellgrinders. Most end
up dying of the quivers - uncontrollable bouts of trembling that make any normal function
nearly impossible. But escape is hardly an option: the phosphorescent glow of their skin,
caused by working, sleeping and eating in a dark cellar with magical spellstones, would
shine like a beacon for all to see.
Tommo refuses to face such a miserable fate, so now he is running as fast as he can to
the coast, he has been granted sanctuary for eight days and must leave the shores by
then - or face the hangman's noose, Tommo is about to give up all hope, when he meets
Akenna, a local fisherman's daughter who has enough troubles without a starving, silver -
skinned runaway dogging her every step. But the friendship they develop just might
uncover the truth behind long buried secrets in each of their lives... and ultimately change
the shape of their world forever.
Review by Jack, 13, (Concord, MA)-
Tommo, a spellgrinders' apprentice, managed to escape the cellars and claim sanctuary
in the name of Gildia, but that sanctuary comes at a price. Tommo now has eight days to
get off the island, or he can be killed by anyone on the island. When he collapses on his
way, he is given help from Akenna, and the two become friends. Meanwhile, in the castle,
news of Tommo's sanctuary claim makes the ruler, Fallon, nervous of old enemies. In an
effort to find more out, he releases an old friend that he betrayed from the dungeon;
Harver-Snatcher. Also, Harver-Snatcher's daughter, the bewitched wife of Fallon the
Protector, tries to rebel against Fallon any way she can, but the enchantments make her
think of only flowers and dresses.
I would give this book a 4.5/5 stars because it has a great plot and cool characters. I
particularly enjoyed how when the book started there was one character, and as the story
progressed more characters were introduced, and finally, all the characters came
together for the conclusion. I didn't give it a 5 because when the characters were traveling,
there was little sense of time; I couldn't tell when they had traveled far or near, and how
long it took. Good book.
