Teaser on the inside cover of the hardcover version of The Amulet of Samarkand by
Jonathan Stroud-
Nathaniel is eleven years old and a magician's apprentice, learning the traditional arts of
magic. All is well until he has a life - changing encounter with Simon Lovelace, a
magician of unrivaled ruthlessness and ambition. When Lovelace brutally humiliates
Nathaniel in public, Nathaniel decides to speed up his education, teaching himself
spells way beyond his years. With revenge on his mind, he masters one of the toughest
spells of all and summons Bartimaeus, a five - thousand - year - old djinni, to assist him.
But summoning Bartimaeus and controlling him are two different things entirely, and
when Nathaniel sends the djinni out to steal Lovelace's greatest treasure, the Amulet of
Samarkand, he finds himself caught up in a whirlwind of magical espionage, murder,
and rebellion.

A stolen amulet.^2
A tale of intrigue, murder, and revenge.^3
The First in the Bartimaeus trilogy.^4
^1 Or so they think...in reality, we demons call the shots.
^2 I didn't do it...well, alright, I did, but it wasn't my fault. I was forced into it. Who by? Ah,
that's the embarrassing part...
^3 And me, Bartimaeus. The star of the show.
^4 My exploits are simply too numerous and splendid to be contained in one solitary
volume.
Review by Jack, 13, (Concord, MA)-
Bartimaeus is a great, powerful djinni who has seen the world, met all the greats, and
now... is summoned by a mere eleven year old. The eleven year old; Nathaniel is
extremely bright, and angry. Humiliated by Lovelace; an all around mean guy, Nathaniel
means to get his revenge. With Bartimaeus, Nathaniel will steal a prized possession of
Lovelace's; the Amulet of Samarkand, but when he does, he finds that he may have taken
on too much.
I would rate this book 4.5/5 stars because it has a good plot and interesting characters.
Bartimaeus is always very funny, and I like that the author narrated with him, and not just
Nathaniel. I particularly like the footnotes that were sprinkled throughout the book; they
offered more insight into the people and places in the book. I didn't rate it a 5 because
the characters' personalities change too much. I like that the author created a sequel,
because a few questions raised in this book aren't answered. I can't wait to read the
sequel.
