Teaser on the back of the paperback version of The Giver by Lois Lowry-
Jonas' world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain.
There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community.
When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to receive special training from The
Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of true pain and pleasure of life. Now
it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.
Review by Jack (Concord MA USA, 13)-
The Giver is a book where emotions are downplayed and everything is controlled
in an attempt at a Utopian society. Jonas is "Apprehensive" about the upcoming
Ceremony of Twelve in which all the Elevens will become Twelves and be given
their Assignment. The Assignment is a job that they are given and must keep, for
the rest of their lives. The Assignment is chosen by The Council of Elders who
watch each individual since they were born to determine what Assignment they are
given so that they fit into the community well. At the ceremony, Jonas is skipped.
When everyone else has received their Assignment, Jonas is told that he will
become The Receiver, one who receives all the memories from the Giver. The
memories are from many times, and they include pain and sorrow, but also
pleasure and joy. Once Jonas receives all the memories, he will take over The
Giver's job. Jonas Learns of many scary things, one of which is Release. Everyone
in the Community is told that once Released, one goes to Elsewhere, but Jonas
learns the frightening truth.
Overall, I would give this book a 3.5/5 Stars because Lois Lowry weaves different
parts of the book into each other, telling the reader new information slowly and
suspense fully. I thought that the book was a little hard to read at first, but was
easier the second time, so I would suggest this book to ages 12+. I thought the
author left a few questions unanswered with the cliffhanger ending, but I still
enjoyed the book, and I found that most of my questions were answered in the
companion books.
